Liam Murray graduated in 1953 from Glasgow University and joined the Colonial Service as an Agricultural Officer, being sent on a two-year course for a Diploma in Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad where he met and married Heather McDonald, an Air Hostess with British West Indies Airways

He was posted to Tanganyika as District Agricultural Officer in Moshi, the district in which Kilimanjaro is, then as Regional Agricultural Officer in Bukoba on Lake Victoria.

He came back to the UK in 1965, joining ICI Plant Protection working in Dumfries and latterly in Edinburgh as Scottish Manager.  
Liam took early retirement in 1958 and worked as Treasurer/Secretary for the National Museums of Scotland Charitable Trust raising funds for the Fitting out of the Museum of Scotland.   

Moving back to Dumfries Liam has been Chairman of Probus and President of the Dumfriesshire & Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society.
