President Sandy Bannerman presided over last week's meeting of the Rotary Club and welcomed John Petlock, Pennsylvannia who is on an exchange visit to Hawick through St Mary's Parish Church and was the guest of Ron Sutherland.
The speaker was Derek Ingles who gave an interesting talk on his day out at the Commonwealth Games at Hampden Park. On arrival and parking his car he was astonished to see the police emerging from their cars and at the amount and type of weapons they carried. The games started at 6 p.m. and they took their seats in plenty time and enjoyed the entertainment on show in a full stadium. They saw the men's and women's 200 m semis and final events as well as the discus, hurdles and para events. Everything went like clockwork and the atmosphere was electric backed up by the famous Hampden roar. He also saw his friend Samantha Kinghorn competing in her wheelchair event. The medal ceremonies were emotional and impressive. Derek, in his inimitable style, took the members in spirit to the games in his talk and, after questions, Gus Neilson gave the vote of thanks.
