A big turnout of members, wives, guests
and visitors appeared at last week's Rotary Club meeting chaired by
Vice-President Jim Walker. Ian and Margaret Hutchings brought greetings
from Ellesmere Rotary Club, Shropshire and Divvy Caird was the guest of the
Sutherlands. The speaker was David McLeod, nephew of Past President Bobby
Cairns's wife Ina and he gave an excellent illustrated talk on his life on a
luxury cruise liner. Formerly Director of Music, Midlothian County Council
he took early retirement one and a half years ago and now takes 6 month
contracts as Music and Entertainment Director with Royal Caribbean Cruises and
will now be aboard the "Mariner of the Seas" in the Far East. The ship's
dimensions are impressive; 313 metres long and bigger than Murrayfield BT Rugby
stadium, costing over £1 bn and the slides highlighted the sheer luxury and
opulence of the vessel in this booming market in the leisure industry. He
explained the impressive logistics e.g. 150,000 meals per week as well as
highlighting his own role as Head of Entertainments which showed that it is not
all plain sailing and attention has to be given to every last detail as that is
what the customer expects. David's parents were present at the meeting to
hear his address when he gave a tune on his trumpet accompanied on keyboard by
Grace Jack. Many questions ensued after which the vote of thanks was given
by his uncle Bobby for an excellent talk which was the envy of the
audience.
