The formal transition from one Rotary year to the next.
It was hand-over time at the Rotary Club
last week when Mairhi Trickett passed the Presidency to Jim Walker. In his
acceptance speech Jim said he was honoured to accept the post and he would
give it his best effort to succeed in the role in the Club which is the oldest
in the Borders. District Assistant Governor Jo Pawley, Eyemouth was
present and she offered her best wishes to Jim for a successful year. It
was decided to award the Portobello Rotary Club £200 towards their charity fund
raising event by a cycle run from John o' Groats to Land's End. The
various convenors laid out their project plans for the coming year. Money
will be donated to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to provide equipment for
the current crop of participants. Gus Neilson, Foundation reported that
the club would continue in their efforts to support End Polio Now. This
has been a Rotary Project over 30 years to eradicate the world of polio and he
was pleased to announce that the latest figures show it has been reduced to 11
cases world-wide, all in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Hawick Club has
always made the fight to rid polio from the world one of their highest
priorities and he said it was all down to the magnificent generosity of
the people of Hawick and district in supporting the club when called upon, in
which they can be justifiably proud and they were now in touching distance of
the finishing line. International Convenor Linden Warburton reported they
would be supporting the Micro-financing scheme to help people set up small
businesses in the Third-World where the club lends them the money which is then
repaid in affordable instalments. Scott Elliot was appointed
Vice-President for his third term of office, being the first time this has
happened.
