President Jim Walker welcomed members to
last week's meeting of the Rotary Club at the Mansfield House Hotel when Past
President Robin Mason introduced the speaker Stacey Edwards of the North Bridge
Dental Practice, Hawick, who gave an excellent, well constructed, illustrated
talk on her work in Tanzania, Africa in September, 2016 with the charity 'Bridge
2 Aid'. She undertook a 2 week course assisting in oral and dental
health care with the residents there who were suffering from teeth
problems. 'Bridge 2 Aid' runs courses where they treat patients and also
train-up teams of native people who can adminster dental care after they
leave. They worked in the most basic of conditions where even clean water
was a problem. It was an eye-opening and unbelievable experience for
Stacey and she experienced a different perspective of dental care from what she
usually experiences. Questions arising were admirably dealt with and led to
further discussion and the members were full of admiration for the work Stacey
undertook and the manner in which she explained it after which President Jim
gave the vote of thanks.
A certificate and letter of thanks was
read out from The Wheelchair Foundation UK for the £300 donation from the club
which, ironically, went to assist a patient in Tanzania with the gift of a
wheelchair.
