Poppy Display, Burgess Hill Bandstand

Members of the Community came together to produce a wonderful display in our Town Centre.

This display will be used in future years, to pay tribute to all those who lost their lives for our freedom.

Poppy Community Project, Burgess Hill

A simple idea from Central Sussex Rotary has been adopted and supported by a number of local residents and organisations.  Working with Burgess Hill Creative Community (The Kiln), Rotary put out a plea for people to make poppies to be displayed on the bandstand for Remembrance.

The response has been phenomenal with support from so many people, and ranging from students to the more elderly residents.  Rotary also received two large displays from Standen House, East Grinstead (National Trust) which have been used for the display at the War Memorial, opposite St John’s Church.

The bandstand is on the route of the annual Remembrance Sunday Parade, which this year, will be held on 10 November with an Act of Remembrance also taking place on Monday 11th November at 11.00 am.

The display will be up from 26 October until 12 November and will then be stored to use in future years.  Donations are invited to the Royal British Legion.  You can buy poppies or donate to the Poppy Appeal at the old Costa Coffee Unit in the Market Place or online.

Julie Smyth, President of Central Sussex Rotary said ‘We have been overwhelmed by the community response and would like to thank all those who contributed to the display.  This just shows that if we all pull together, we can achieve so much in our local community.  If you have an idea for a project or would like to get involved, please contact jsmythrotary@gmail.com.

We would like to thank The Martlets Shopping Centre and Burgess Hill Town Council for allowing us to display the poppies at the Bandstand and the War Memorial.’
