A Three Year Project to Refurbish a Village called Bimma in the Ashanti Region of Ghana

It is 2 years since, following a request from District, the Rotary Club of Leigh began to think about undertaking a project in Ghana. This became the BIMMA project to refurbish a village in the Ashanti Region. The Rotary Club entered into a relationship with Ashanti Development, a small but highly focused charity operating solely in Ghana, under which the charity became the project consultants, for planning and work carried out under matching grant conditions, and preferred contractors, for other work.

The scope of the project covers water refurbishment; latrine provision; agricultural production improvement and additional produce; building a playground, junior secondary school, kindergarten and food processing plant; and providing simple transport, school materials and free school meals.

Rotary Clubs from Prescot, Newton-le-Willows, Wigan, Rushen and Western Mann, St Helens, Ramsbottom and Bury joined with Leigh and with Ramsbotttom Interact, Golborne High School, several Inner Wheels and Soroptomists and many individuals in raising money to fund this project. Also a matching grant was obtained together with a DSG and a contribution from the Millenium Development Agency. In total the project will cost about
