HARWICH & DOVERCOURT ROTARY CLUB DECEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER On Monday 11th November our speaker was Sue Fletcher from Age Concern who told us about the many services the Charity provides for elderly folk - they can only help those who request help so there are a lot more people in the community who probably need help but they cannot reach. They have volunteers who are willing to go and chat to lonely people on a regular basis, provide expert advice and suggest how to make their homes better for living in and so enable them to stay in their own home. They also advise on all aspects of insurance A vote of thanks was given by David Rutson and we all showed our appreciation in the usual way. ​​​​********************************* On Monday 18th November our speaker was David Shelton from the Essex Boys and Girls Clubs. Started some 74 years ago it is one organisation which is going from strength to strength so they must be doing the right things. The age group is 11 until 19 although they have started a section which cater for up to 24 year old and the aim is to improve the lives of young people by helping to provide local clubs for those youngsters to go to with their friends, to take part in activities of all sorts. They also put on county events for club members to compete or take part in all manner of sporting and outdoor activities. Numerous clubs and schools are affiliated to the EGBC including our local Boxing Club. In fact boxing in Essex has gone from strength to strength and it is hoped that one boxer from an Essex club may be selected to represent England in the Commonwealth Games. Apart from their involvement with our local boxing club there is little coverage in the Tendring area but David said that they aim to rectify that in the future. The talk was enhanced by a presentation on screen showing all the activities that the young people take part in and enjoy. I gathered that none of our members had heard of the EGBC but we hope that in future this part of the world may benefit from that organisation.
