THE PERCY CROSS RIGG WALK

Sunday 13 September, 2009

Map of of the two walks

Our base is the car park at Gribdale Gate. Leave Great Ayton going towards Little Ayton and follow signs for the station. Keep on about a mile beyond the station. The car park is on the right of the road after you cross a cattle grid. Registration and collection of route map is from 9.30am to 11.30am.

Both walks climb to Captain Cook's Monument and then continue down the hill to take the lower path through Mill Bank Wood coming out at Bankside Farm. Go down to Kildale and along the road to the New Row turning where the first check point is situated. The "Family Walk" (6.5 miles, height gain 675 ft.) climbs past New Row up to Percy Cross Rigg and turns left; the second check point is at the Sleddale turning (called Sledle locally). Continue to the gate at the end of the road and then take the path west across Great Ayton Moor back to the start.

The Long Walk (10 miles, height gain 850 ft.) continues on the road from the first check point and follows the path across fields to North Bank Wood and the Westerdale road, where we turn north. Follow the road over Percy Cross Rigg to the second check point at the Sleddale turn. The route goes along the track past Sleddale Farm to meet the Cleveland Way near Highcliffe Farm. Turn left on the Cleveland Way to Hutton Moor Gate at the entrance to Hutton Lowcross Woods and continue on the Cleveland Way to Little Roseberry. Here the route returns to the start.
