14 members, one recent departed member, and their partners supported Barry and Liz Ellwood at the 2014 District Conference in Scarborough. Barry [aided by Tim Ward] selected an excellent small hotel taken over by the group, apart from one other guest who looked a bit phased at breakfast each morning, that was very well located for the conference venue and the town attractions.
All the events took place in 'The Spa' and the Friday evening 'fish and chip supper', presented in a cardboard box, spoke for itself!! The entertainment included a 13 year old female soprano, a quartet of 19 year old male singers who were pretty good and the Military Wives Choir.
The conference programme was mixed with District Governor Ken Billington acting as compare - say no more. There were several charity-based speakers on Saturday morning perhaps eclipsed by Andy Reid, a triple amputee Afghanistan veteran, who gave a very down to earth description of events leading to his loss of limbs as he represented the Army Benevolent Fund.
Following a drinks reception in the hotel suite [see photos] occupied by Barry and his entourage, Saturday night provided a not bad meal for 800 in the spa, followed by music from 'The Likely Lads' that was not to everybody's taste but suited many. Given the increasing age of club members late night drinking did not occur!!
