The Poppy Appeal with Peter Epton

Tue, Oct 20th 2015 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Speaker:- Peter Epton on 'The Poppy Appeal'
Stewards:- Lead Christine Crowe 2nd Stuart Rhodes ( Meeting Report)

Our speaker today was Peter Epton from the Nantwich branch of the Nantwich Royal British Legion. He told us about the Legion’s beginnings in 1921(it was not given the royal accolade until 1971) and the very first poppy appeal, when two ladies made silk poppies to recall this flower, which grew profusely on the very muddy Great War battlefields in Belgium and France. So for 94 years the Legion has been helping emotionally and financially ex-service men and women and their dependants. Last year the Poppy Day appeal raised £50 million.

Finally Peter thanked members of our Club, who will be collecting this year at Sainsburys for the Royal British Legion.
