Guest Speaker: Prof Frank Stajano - Pico: liberating humanity from passwords


Dr Frank Stajano is Reader in Security and Privacy at the Computer Laboratory, Fellow of Trinity College and Head of the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research, all at the University of Cambridge.

He received a Laurea in Electronic Engineering from Università di Roma La Sapienza and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge. Before and alongside his academic career he was a research scientist in industry (Olivetti, Oracle, AT&T, Toshiba, Google) and therefore his research retains a strong practical orientation. He is a pioneer of Internet-of-Things security, having written the first textbook in 2002 (“Security for ubiquitous computing”, Wiley). He was elected a Toshiba Fellow in 2000. He was awarded an ERC grant in 2012 for his research on eliminating passwords. He also teaches Japanese swordsmanship (kendo) at the University of Cambridge. Visit his website at
