Visit to Car Transplants

Aerial View of Car Transplants at Hurleston

On the 13th October 15 members of the club visited the Hurleston branch of this company to see how the motor industry is coping with the ever tighter regulations to dispose of and recycle vehicles in a way which is ever more friendly for the environment.

We saw how this business, set up by the Schofield brothers in 1974, has become steadily more efficient as European and national rules have become increasingly stringent. They have probably become the most advanced company in their field, having attained ISO14001 accreditation for all vehicle depollution and processing, achieving a rate of 97% of each vehicle being recycled.  This thus keeps the amount of waste to landfill being kept to an absolute minimum.

All the above has been achieved by keen attention to detail and massive investment in the state of art equipment.

Any parts which can be recycled are.  They have not only a national sales network through dealers but also extensively use E Bay, with their customers now spread out over 28 countries.  Working very closely with Insurance Companies, they ensure that they receive a high a yield as possible from all claims.  This in turns benefits all drivers, helping to keep premiums down.

This was no "Del Boy" or "Steptoe" operation.  On arrival all vehicles are photographed and any parts recovered are Bar Coded, enabling a complete record to be kept of every unit.

We watched the heavy plant operators delicately dismantling vehicles with a dexterity which evaded all of us when endeavouring to grab sweets and other items in the amusement arcades in our youth!  It was a sobering thought to see what, until recently had probably been someone's pride and joy, could be reduced to a metal block within a matter of minutes.

A Vocational visit which I am sure everyone enjoyed and which certainly gave us an insight in to a world which few of us knew anything about.
