Weekly Meeting - Barney Baber - The History of HPB

Wed, May 18th 2016 at 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Friend: Martin Odell VOT: Mike Frost

The History of the HPB

Barney Baber, the operations manager for Holiday Property Bond (HPB), presented an overview of an alternative to timeshare that has the added credibility of several long standing satisfied customers within the Club.

HPB which combines the sense of property ownership with the elements of a holiday club has attracted a steady flow of investment from when it was launched in 1983.  Net assets are now £275 million with 42,000 members.  HPB's portfolio of 1,400 properties offers some of the most desirable self-catering holiday locations in the UK and Continental Europe and some special properties, from restored stately homes, to modern villas.

HPB membership is through purchase (minimum cost £5,000) of a life assurance bond, which invests in securities and holiday properties.  What differentiates it from timeshare investments is that via a points based system its bondholders are able to stay in any of the properties in its portfolio, rather than being limited to just one.  The life assurance bonds can be passed on to family members and are marketable with a cash in value after two years.  There is an early money back “safety net” with conditions within the first three years.

The factor that shows most clearly that HPB is purely a lifestyle product rather than a capital growth investment is its charges.  To start with there is an initial charge of 25% plus a 2.8% annual management charge.  A user charge is made for each holiday week taken to cover property overheads.  Travel and food costs are on top.

Nonetheless, HPB has enduring popularity, proving that excellent customer service and a solid reputation still speaks volumes when serving a market that wants an enjoyable holiday of a consistently high standard, in good locations with like-minded individuals.

Interested investors should speak to their financial advisor, or better still, a HPB participating Club member, who will be pleased to share any referral commission.
