Barry Evans gave a brief account of his visit to Kathmandu and to the meeting of the Rotary Club of The Himalayan Gurkhas, dressed in appropiate headgear, he presented President Rod with a delghtful pink scarf and a matching hat from the Rotary Club, Barry will be giving the Club a fuller account of his worthwhile visit at a later date.
Nantwich local PC’s, Matt Stonier and P.C. Marc Harley, then spoke to the Club
Although hampered by a shorter than usual time-slot, Matt and Mark were able to eloquently describe their roles in local policing
Since July 2015, Nantwich has had a dedicated team of 6 PCs and 5 PCSOs to police the Town, of which Matt and Marc are a part. They view their roles to be, where possible, proactive rather than purely reactive (the old model). This new system has also allowed a much greater degree of flexibility in their approach to policing the area.
They spend a lot of their time giving talks to local schools and organisations promoting awareness of local crime issues and encouraging a positive experience of the police.
The ‘big’ issues for Nantwich Town Centre currently are alcohol-fuelled violence at night (especially at the taxi rank in the Swine Market), legal ‘highs’ and petty vandalism (e.g. turning over the Town’s planters).
Measures proposed to deter some of these activities include employing a taxi ‘marshal’ and body cameras for the pub bouncers.
Marc also talked about the value of restorative justice for both victim and miscreant as well as the use of community punishments.
