Jim sub-titled his talk 'Coal Capitalism and Carbon Democracy' and took us on a whistle-stop tour of the history of coal mining in the immediate Durham area. Touching on the terrible conditions suffered by child workers in the early days, the nature of some of the coal owners and the formation of the Durham Miners Association, Jim painted a broad picture of our region's heritage. A telling illustration from his presentation is reproduced below - coal hewers over 100 years apart and not much had changed!
