The, recently appointed, Head Teacher of Coltness High School, John McGilp, was our guest speaker at this week’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw. Born and brought up in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, John now resides in Kilmarnock. Before coming to Coltness High School John had spent a considerable time in Education in the Highlands where he was Depute Head Teacher at Kinlochleven, then acting HT at Thurso High, before being appointed at Coltness. Coltness HS has a roll of 836 pupils and he spoke of the achievements of his senior pupils in the 2014 SQA Exam Results which showed that Coltness was way above the average for North Lanarkshire schools and compared favourably with results for schools on a National basis. He then spoke enthusiastically about five innovative practices he had helped develop at Coltness H S namely the Summer Chill, Doctors hate Postcodes, Wishaw Music Project, Wishaw Select and the Polar Academy.
