Christmas Lunch, Rotary with Inner Wheel

Thu, Dec 15th 2016 at 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

The Dean of Durham Cathedral, the Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, came to deliver the Christmas Message.

We have just elected the Dean as an Honorary Member in line with a long-held Club tradition. As he is new to the Club and to Durham he gave us something of a "job-talk". He described his family roots in Devon and his connections with the Mission to Seafarers. His time as Canon at Westminster Abbey saw his involvement with the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, a visit by President Barack Obama and – historically – the Pope.

He went on to reflect on the situation in the middle-east and other tragedies and challenges around the world – all the news giving us the impression that the “world is falling apart”. But he encouraged us to be optimistic, noting that there are fewer people in absolute poverty than ever before and that, despite what the news media tells us, there are fewer areas of conflict than ever before.

Happy Christmas to everyone as we celibrate the birth of the "Prince of Peace".
