Patrick Harvie, M.S.P., will address the members
H&R: Jane Allan & Ian St. John
VoT: Willie Talbot

As usual, President Andrew Murray opened tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw with his "Beyond the Tea Towel" talk and this week it was about Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham, a Scottish politician, writer, journalist and adventurer. Although an aristocrat, he became a socialist after being elected for the Liberal Party in the North Lanarkshire constituency. Working, with Keir Hardie, to found the Scottish Labour Party, Robert Cunninghame Graham was passionate about Scottish home rule and he was, also, a founder of the National Party of Scotland in 1928; and the first president of the Scottish National Party in 1934.

Our guest speaker, this evening, was Patrick Harvie, the co-convener of the Scottish Green Party with Maggie Chapman and Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Glasgow region. First elected in 2003, Patrick and was re-elected in 20072011 and 2016.

Educated at Dumbarton Academy and Manchester Metropolitan University, where he was briefly a member of the Labour party, prior to his election, Patrick was a youth worker. He has gained attention both for issues strongly associated with the Greens, such as campaigning against the extension to the M74 motorway in Glasgow, and for more 'mainstream' issues such as opposition to the Identity Card Bill.

He said his first involvement with the Greens was when with his mother he attended meetings when recycling was the point at issue. He talked about a variety of subjects that he was passionate about including global warning, creation of local wealth initiatives, use of foodbanks, recycling and a host of others.

Patrick then responded to a number of questions put to him at the end of his talk and Willie Talbot proposed the vote of thanks.
