H&R: Tom McPherson & Ronnie Moore
VoT: Tom Sleith

Tonight, the members of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw welcomed our local MP, Marion Fellows, as guest speaker.

Mrs Fellows is a politician, representing the Scottish National Party, and she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Motherwell and Wishaw at the general election in May 2015.

She told us that, after attending Carrick Academy, in Maybole, she studied Accountancy and Finance at Heriot Watt University. For nineteen years, she taught business studies at West Lothian College; where she was an active trade unionist in the Educational Institute of Scotland. Marion has lived with her family in Wishaw and Bellshill since the 1970s and she was elected North Lanarkshire Councillor for Wishaw in 2012.

She was active in the "Yes Motherwell and Wishaw" campaign at the 2014 independence referendum. However, despite a nationwide victory for the "Better Together" campaign rejecting independence, North Lanarkshire was one of the four council areas which voted in favour of Scottish independence.

In 2007, Marion contested the Motherwell and Wishaw Scottish Parliament constituency against the incumbent, then-First Minister, Jack McConnell, and in 2010 contested the equivalent Westminster seat challenging sitting MP, Frank Roy. After being selected as the SNP candidate for Motherwell and Wishaw for the 2015 UK General Election, she defeated Roy and she was re-elected as MP for the seat at the 2017 UK General Election.

Marion then explained her normal working week which sees her returning to Motherwell Station late on a Thursday evening when she catches up on local news from her taxi driver!

She informed members in discussion with the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, she discovered that he was an unsuccessful Conservative candidate in the 1987 General Election for the Motherwell South seat which included Wishaw. Being known to him through this unexpected ‘connection’, Marion has been able to catch the eye of the Speaker allowing her to speak in Parliament.

Members asked a number of question of our MP and Past President Tom Sleith proposed the vote of thanks.
