The guest speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Claire Connelly, Headteacher of St Aidan’s High School in Wishaw.
So far this session, pupils from St. Aidan’s have entertained our members three times. Two senior pupils told us of their experiences at R.Y.L.A. over the summer, we had a fantastic evening of musical entertainment and, last week, two S3 pupils, winners of the North Lanarkshire Public Speaking competition, gave their speeches on ‘Fake News’.
Given this, it was fitting that the school’s Headteacher should asked to address the club and Claire, who has been in charge at St Aidan’s for three and half years, chose changes and developments in Scottish education she has seen in a teaching career that has spanned twenty-six years. Among many other topics, she commented on the new school curriculum, including the project work and assignments making up to 40% of the exam pass mark. There was now much more interaction with businesses as a result of the new Foundation Apprenticeships which have been very well received.
The school was inspected in December and the report has been very encouraging with many positive comments. The school’s motto is Seeking the Best and Claire said that this effects everything done at St Aidan’s.
Claire’s expertise and pride in her school shone through her excellent presentation.
She responded to a huge number of questions put to her by the members and Past President Bill McCallum proposed the vote of thanks.'What We Do' Main Pages:
