Each competing primary school submitted the best four pieces of prose or poetry written by their year 6 students chosen by their Year 6 teachers for entry into the competition. The entries were considered by a panel of independent judges, Giles Paley-Phillips, a local author of children’s books, Ben Messer, senior English teacher at Seaford Head school and Mary Young, a retired primary headteacher.
The theme selected this year was “My Inspiration” which certainly touched the fuse of creativity amongst the students.
The standard of the work produced by the students was very high. All twelve entrants fully merited the certificates presented to them by Young Mayor Dominic Avey.
The judges read and commented upon the three prize winning entries before Rotarian Michael Allen, who chaired proceedings, asked Seaford Mayor Councillor Linda Wallraven to present the certificates and cash prizes to the winners.
The names of the prize winners were announced in reverse order. Third prize was awarded to Freddie Jarvis from Cradle Hill Primary School, second prize to Aimee Barrett from Annecy Catholic Primary School. The overall winner was Ayla Graham from Seaford Primary school and her delightful poem will be entered into the Rotary District competition which will be judged in April.
All of the students are to be congratulated for taking part in this creative and somewhat demanding competition and we hope that they gain greatly from the experience.
