Wednesday 22nd May 2019 The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District welcomed to their weekly meeting a very special long term and honorary club member Brian Lord.
Brian who is a long standing member and a local celebrity of the Thornhill community came along to celebrate his 90th birthday with his fellow members and guests.
Brian started training as a nurse in London and worked for five years in a neurosurgical theatre before moving to Scotland to become a psychiatric nurse at the Crichton. Before Brian retired he was head of adult health education.
Brian has had many hobbies and until recent years he sang bass with the Dalgarno Singers in Thornhill, painted in watercolour and drew with pen and ink. He was also a keen gardener and maintained his own allotment.
During the meeting the members also received a very interesting presentation from Rotarians Ian Jess and Martin Armstrong on how Dumfries Rotary Club have worked alongside some primary schools to set up successful “RotaKids” clubs in Dumfries.
Could similar “RotaKids” clubs be of interest and could they also be set up at other schools in the Nithsdale area?

What is RotaKids?
RotaKids is a fun and exciting way for children aged 7-12 to make friends and get involved with important activities in the community, all while having a great time in the process.
RotaKids clubs are based in schools, youth groups or community centres and with the help and support from teachers, youth leaders and the local Rotary club, children can gain a valuable experience in helping others and learning interesting, new things.
