Mike Whitlock

Job Talk

On leaving school at the age of 15, Mike joined Texas Instruments (TI), a multinational semiconductor company founded in the United States, which operated in Bedford from 1960 to 1993 and was at one time its biggest employer.

Mike was involved in the finance (or control) section and, over the years, rose to head this with a staff of 29.

Mike witnessed the very rapid advances in the industry during the 1960's and 1970's and recalled the development by TI of the world's first electronic calculator and its value to him dealing with mountains of figures.

He explained the ethos and workings of the industry and stressed the importance of finance forming part of the team developing and manufacturing products. Also covered in the comprehensive talk - time in charge of finance at TI Italy (with some amusing anecdotes), possible reasons for the decision to close the Bedford facility, the management 'buy out', and the final closure.
