Emergency Power for Baby Home
With help from the Rotary Club of Mwanza in Tanzania and a grant from Rotary Foundation, we were able to provide a much needed generator for a Baby Home
The supply and installation of a diesel-powered back-up electricity generator for the Forever Angels Baby Home in Mwanza,Tanzania is an excellent example of the co-operation between Rotary clubs and the wider world of Rotary.
Last year our club’s International and Foundation committee received a request from Liz Savage, working in the Forever Angels charity, for help in the Baby Home, which was experiencing frequent cuts from the main electricity supply system. We applied to our Rotary District 1145, and they, using funds from the Rotary Foundation, doubled the club’s agreed donation so that we had around £1,000 to purchase the back-up generator.
We contacted the local Rotary Club of Mwanza, and they agreed to work with us and the Baby Home by using our funds to purchase and install the generator. You can see a photo of the members of the Rotary Club and Liz Savage with the generator just prior to the installation. Such a good relationship now exists between the Baby Home and RC of Mwanza that they have made Liz an Honorary member of their Rotary Club. They have also agreed to affix a Rotary roundel to the Baby Home truck that is used in the surrounding area for visits and outreach work.
The Forever Angels Baby Home provides interim care for orphaned and abandoned children. They took in their first child in 2006 and the focus has been on reuniting orphaned and abandoned children with their relatives and setting them up to be able to provide life-long care.
It has now been improved and expanded to include a pre-school, a sensory room for children with special educational needs and a ‘Tiny Baby’ home, offering specialised care for premature, seriously ill or malnourished newborn babies.
