Young Chefs Competition.
If you happened to be walking along Steyne Road one Saturday morning recently and you were captivated by an aroma of five star cooking it may just have been from the Young Chefs Competition which Seaford Rotary now organises each year for the students at Seaford Head School. The competition was open to pupils between the ages of 11 and 17 and each chef was required to cook, in one and a half hours, a healthy meal for two people consisting of a main course and dessert and costing not more than £15. The mouth-watering results were then judged by Stefano Diella, owner of Diella’s Restaurant in the town and by local professional chef Andrew Owens. The cost of ingredients was covered by Seaford Rotary who also provided prizes.
This was the first time most of the competitors had entered a cooking competition and the main comment from the judges was of the high standard they had all reached, particularly as their ages ranged from only eleven to fourteen. Each one had produced quality dishes for both the main course and dessert which made judging very difficult. The winner this year was Jack Jenner and the runners up were Cienna Jamieson and Meadow Veasey. Jack will now go forward in January to the next stage of the national Rotary competition where he will be required to cook a three course meal in two hours.
Jim Anderson from the Seaford Rotary’s Youth Services Committee who organised the competition congratulated all the chefs on what they had achieved and thanked Mrs. Feneron and Mrs. O’Neil from the school and the judges for all their help in making the competition possible. Certificates and prizes were then presented by the Mayor Nazish Adil, and the Young Mayor James Jenkins who is also a student at the school.
This is just one of the competitions being organised by Seaford Rotary for young people in the town but the only one where entry is restricted to Seaford Head students. The Young Artists and Young Photographers Competitions have already been launched and March will see the ever popular Young Musicians. In addition, at this time, our Primary Schools will be competing to find the best Young Writer. Following its great success earlier this year a repeat of a competition for Young Scientists is currently in the planning stage and the scope to organise a debating competition is also being explored Details of all the events can be found on the Seaford Rotary website www.seafordrotary.org.uk
