Young Writers Presentation
By Mike Allen
This year's event was held on 16 March 2020 just before the coronavirus outbreak had exploded into an epidemic, although a number of teachers and children had decided reluctantly that they preferred to avoid meeting others.
This annual event gives Seaford Rotary the opportunity to reward the young students from the local primary schools for their participation in the Young Writers competition.
The competition encourages the local primary schools to involve their students in creative writing by asking them to write a piece of prose or poetry on a pre chosen subject.
The year teacher selects the four best entries from the group which we then collect to be read and assessed by our panel of independent judges.
Every year the judges comment on the high standard of the entries and this year was certainly no exception. There were sixteen scripts for the judges to consider and as six of these were poems it was decided to award a poetry prize in addition to the usual ones.
Unfortunately due to the need to reduce the proceedings to the minimum the Judges did not present an appraisal of the winning entries as happens in normal times and we proceeded to present the awards.
A certificate for participation was given to each finalist by the Young Mayor James Jenkins which was followed by the presentation by the Mayor Nazish Adil to the individual prize winners who represented each of the four schools that had taken part in the competition.
Our President Keith Ross handed a cheque for £100 to a teacher from Seaford Primary school at which the 1st placed entrant was a student.
Finally to bring the proceedings to a close a vote of thanks was proposed to our judges for their continued valued contribution in making this event a success
