President Katrina opened tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw by welcoming the members and our speaker for the evening, Professor Stuart Monro of the Rotary Club of Edinburgh City.
President Katrina’s piece of Interesting Rotary Information highlighted the fact that a number of new clubs have been chartered during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rotary Club of Northwich Weaver is the most recent. The Cheshire club consists of 12 men and 10 women, aged from 30 to mid-60’s and was chartered via Zoom in the presence of R.I.B.I. President, Tom Griffin and D.G., David Hartley.
The club was originally formed by contacting and inviting community and business leaders, who in turn used modern technology to recruit members.
Led by President David Buxton, the club uses Zoom meetings for maximum impact with open community meetings, quizzes, wine tasting evenings and weekly club sessions. The members help people in their community, particularly the homeless, and have organised a September Golf Day event to raise funds.
The three Rotary Clubs in Northwich collaborate, pool their resources, experience and energy to ensure a Rotary presence for the future.
President Katrina introduced Professor Stuart Monro, former Director of Dynamic Earth, who would talk about ‘Living on a Dynamic Planet’.
Professor Monro’s presentation was very interesting and wide ranging, dealing with the effects and global impact of volcanic activity throughout the world. His talk was graphically illustrated with some fascinating slides.
He had travelled to several volcanic regions throughout the world and illustrated - geysers in Iceland; the ‘Atlantic Fracture’ between America and Europe; the 2010 Icelandic eruption that stopped aircraft flying; volcanic activity on White Island off the North Island of New Zealand, resulting in the death of some tourists; a volcanic eruption in Hawaii.
He concluded his presentation with David Attenborough reciting the words of ‘What a wonderful World’ to a series of slides illustrating this fact.
Professor Monro then answered a number of questions put to him by the members.
Charles Keeper proposed our vote of thanks, saying that the talk had been very informative, interesting and beautifully illustrated.
Willie Talbot reported that the Bonus Ball was now a four week ‘roll-over’. Members have been advised of amounts outstanding for the Bonus Ball from July to September and any money owed should be paid into the charity account or forwarded to him, by cash or cheques, if not on online banking.
