President Katrina welcomed everyone to tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw.

In the light of World Polio Day, on 24th October, and Africa being polio free, in her interesting Rotary information Katrina highlighted an article entitled “Polio: the life sentence that never goes away”, which appeared in the recent Rotary magazine. The article dealt with polio survivors and Post-Polio Syndrome.

Colin Powell is a Rotarian and an End Polio Now Ambassador. He is also a polio survivor and believes that more emphasis should be put on survivors of polio, asking the question “Think of it this way. If you go into a village today with a vaccination team to inoculate children, what about the child who contracted polio in the same village the previous day?”

In the UK there are estimated to be 120,000 polio survivors, of which 10,200 live in Scotland. Approximately 60% suffer from Post-Polio Syndrome. Should one of our thoughts on World Polio Day be closer to home?

The evening took the form of a “Zoom Social Chat” where the Rotarians were split into three breakout groups by Callan Dick. The members of the groups were rotated three times after a 10-minute session.

Willie Talbot reported that the Bonus Ball had been a roll-over.
