In opening tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw, President Katrina welcomed everyone to the meeting including the speaker for the evening, Richard Melvin.
Katrina’s interesting Rotary information, tonight, centred on the Notable Rotary Grant Project: Bringing clean water to public schools in Lebanon.
The host sponsor was the Rotary Club of Baabda, Lebanon and the international sponsor was the Rotary Club of Kernersville, North Carolina. The total budget was $43,550.
Municipal water supplies in Lebanon are often tainted because of deteriorating infrastructure, so most people buy bottled water for drinking. Many public schools collect rainwater in rusty tanks, leading to contamination, illness, and missed school days. The influx of refugees from Syria has made schools even more crowded and created an even greater need for clean water.
This grant supplied new water tanks, pipes, filters, and faucets to 19 schools; it also provided hygiene training.
Now, 6,743 children have access to clean water and the project is being replicated throughout the country. Rotarians in Lebanon aim to bring clean water to every public school – totalling more than 1,000. Now that is impressive - Rotary does good work!
Tonight’s speaker, Richard Melvin, the Founder of Dabster Productions, was introduced by Katrina. His topic was ‘Life as a Comedy Producer for the BBC’.
Richard mentioned his connection with Rotary. He was the nephew of Past District Governors, Ian Geddes and Olive Geddes. Richard started his radio and television career in 2001 as a Production Trainee with the BBC and eventually became a Senior Producer, working with many famous people. For a period of five years, he was one of the Producers involved in the Fred McCauley show on BBC Radio Scotland. He set up his own production company in 2006 with the ambition of getting shows commissioned by the BBC.
He gave humorous accounts of the people he had worked with and the comedy shows he had, and was still, producing for BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Scotland and the BBC Scotland Channel. He is also the co-owner of ‘The Stand Comedy Club’.
After his talk he answered a variety of questions from the Rotarians.
In proposing the vote for thanks, Tom Agnew thanked Richard for a very interesting, enjoyable and entertaining talk.
