President Katrina welcomed everyone to tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell ad Wishaw, including guest speaker, Richard Green.
As usual in her introduction, President Katrina highlighted another Rotary International Project, improving sanitation and hygiene training in Benin, West Africa.
The village of Paouignan needed improved clean water infrastructure. The International sponsor was District 2080 (Italy) and the Host sponsor was the Rotary Club of Abomey-Calavi, Benin. The total budget for the project was $158,999.
The Rotarians provided a new well, water tower, 10 new taps, repaired seven older taps, and provided hygiene training in Paouignan. The improved water access and sanitation practices benefitted 17,000 people.
This grant was part of the Future Vision Pilot. The sponsoring clubs understood the Foundation’s desire for sustainable projects and created the hygiene component of the grant before any training documents were available. The grant sponsors communicated in three languages while carrying out this project.
President Katrina introduced Richard Green, Project Manager of the Rotary Jaipur Limb Project on the Indian Subcontinent, and invited him to tell us about the project.
The Rotary Jaipur Limb project is a pro-active fund-raising and project-initiating body of Rotarians, drawn from all over the Rotary International region covering Britain and Ireland. It was formed in 1984 and became a registered charity in 1995.
The aims of Rotary Jaipur Limb Project are: The preservation and protection of health, particularly for the relief of amputees and other limbless persons, including the provision of prostheses and the rehabilitation of individuals. The project enables the disabled.
There are eight permanent centres across India as well as special camps that operate for a few weeks at a time. People can travel up to 1000 miles to be fitted with a limb. The service is free and no-one is ever turned away. 20,000 people are fitted with limbs each year. It takes about 1 hour to make a limb. The strong ‘Jaipur Foot’ is attached to the bottom of the limb.
The latest development is the LN-4 Hand Project which involves the fitting of an un-motorised hand. Again there is no charge to the recipient.
Richard showed several videos throughout his talk to illustrate his presentation and answered some questions from the members.
