Rotary Year starts on 1st July and we have a new president from July. President's comments will appear under this main page every month.
The presidential handover this year was made under different arrangements than usual. A small group of Rotarians gathered in the grounds of Offley House, Sandbach, to see Rtn Richard Hovey remove the chain of office and place it on a table from where it was picked up by Rtn David Barringer, the new president of the club.
PP Richard said that his year started with a BBQ and ended with a Zoom! The biggest event of the year was to have been the meal-pack for Rise Against Hunger but this has had to be put on hold. Other events, like the Swimathon, were cancelled but the visit by students from Macau had gone ahead before the lockdown started.
Rtn David Barringer, in accepting the office of president, said that when he moved from Aberdeen to Sandbach, thirty years ago, he had attended some meetings of Sandbach Rotary. He had been made very welcome but he found the lunchtime meetings difficult to keep and joined Holmes Chapel Rotary. When that club closed in 2018 he transferred to Sandbach.
While being temporarily restrained by lockdown regulations he regarded the present time as a breathing space to prepare the club for the challenges and opportunities for service in the months to come. He said that in the last few months many people had come forward to offer themselves as volunteers in the community. Rotary, with its emphasis on service, always offers a warm welcome to anyone wishing to join members in carrying out community projects.
The President-elect for the forthcoming Rotary year is Rtn Dave Lewis.
