The explosion in Beirut on Tuesday 4th August, which measured 4.5 on the Richter Scale, has caused many deaths and thousands of injuries. Massive international support will be required in order to facilitate a recovery.
Dominic Raab, UK Foreign Secretary, set out the actions being taken by the UK Government to support the people of Lebanon, and said:
“This was a devastating explosion which has caused enormous suffering and damage. The UK is a long-standing friend of Lebanon and the Lebanese people, and we will stand with them in their hour of need. We have offered immediate direct support including search and rescue, emergency medical assistance and up to £5m in humanitarian aid”
The Rotary Club of Beirut Cedars, in Rotary District 2452 in Lebanon, has established a Disaster Response Account with Just Giving, and hopes to raise £15,000 as quickly as possible. This local Rotary Club will decide how the money raised should best be used.
You can keep up to date on progress through Beirut Cedars’ Facebook.
Nailsworth Rotary Club is supporting this fund raising, as are many other Rotary clubs worldwide.
