Today has been an enforced rest day much to the annoyance of most. Some are happy to rest their blisters but most are straining at the leash to get on – not bad for a group of 70-year-olds! But we were told by the doctors that we must rest and acclimatise to the lower oxygen levels at higher altitude if we are to avoid problems later. So we’ve been checking and testing equipment, resting and taking a look at Namche.
Amazing, but here, right in the middle of the Himalayas you find a real town – it’s an old trading post where traditionally Nepalese and Tibetan traders have exchanged salt, dried meat and textiles. There are colourful stalls in the streets, proper shops, including bookshops and grocers, a chemist and a laundry and, of course, plenty selling outdoor gear. There are also a good number of restaurants, coffee shops and bars so we have fed and watered well (though we were told not to over indulge – as if we would!). And, of course, there are many friendly and brightly dressed locals to pass the time with. So, not a bad place to be holed up in for a day. We have enjoyed it. And now we’re fit and rested for tomorrow.
