Young Musician Competition - update for 2021-2022

Young Musician Competition

Young Musician Competition 2021/22

Now that most Covid restrictions have been lifted, it should be possible for Young Musician Club Competitions to go ahead more or less as normal albeit observing any Covid rules or advice in place at the time. It is likely that in some areas the limiting factor may be the willingness of local schools to undertake the additional load of organising and encouraging their budding young musicians to work up for a competition while trying to make up for lost time due to Covid. Hopefully, they will see the YM Competition as an opportunity to stimulate enthusiasm in their charges rather than an additional burden!

Unfortunately RGBI have decided that, as last year, there will be no National final in any of the face to face competitions, including, of course, the YM Competition.  District 1230 have decided not to participate in any Regional face to face competitions, so there will be no Scottish Regional Competition this session. However, my intention is to organise a District 1010 final provided that a sufficient number of Clubs go ahead with local competitions and put forward candidates.

I would therefore strongly urge Clubs to contact their local schools as early as possible and if the response is at all favourable, to go ahead and organise competitions along the usual lines. As there is no Regional Competition I would anticipate holding the District Final as late as possible, probably sometime in May or even early June 2022 to allow plenty time for the Schools to prepare their young musicians after the prolonged lay off and for organising the club events.

The RGBI Young Musician Information Pack is available to download below but remember that you can change the format or rules to suit your local circumstances provided you observe all the general guidance for events involving children. An entry form which can be adapted for use at Club level is also available to download below.

It would be hugely helpful to me if Youth Conveners or those responsible for the music competition could let me know as soon as possible if your Club is going ahead with a competition. If you have any problems please contact me by email or mobile.
