Story - Christmas Morning

Reading aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. Here is a story written by club member Percy Stock.

Christmas is a lovely time to look forward to and young David was very excited because today it was Christmas.   Mummy had popped him into bed and told him firmly that he must go to sleep or Santa won't come.   A very tired little boy had obeyed and very soon was away with the fairies.   Eventually David awoke. It was still very dark but his first thought was, has Santa been?   Carefully he pushed his foot to the bottom of the bed and behold he felt the rustle of paper and knew his dreams had been answered.   He fished down with his hands and to his surprise found a glass jar. Puzzled he undid the cap and dipped his fingers in.   It was sticky and very sweet to taste and David could not resist.   Soon the jar was empty and by now feeling a little sick he put the jar down and was off to sleep again.

Morning came and Mummy was horrified to see all the bed covers and even the walls smeared with red raspberry jam.   She said that as he had been so naughty he would not be allowed to have his presents that day and took everything with her as she left the room. Everything that is except the jam jar.

Later the grownups were playing cards but David was just hanging around them clutching his empty jam jar.   Uncle Fred felt sorry for David and popped a coin into his jar.   As David went round the table all the grownups did the same so that David finished up with quite a bit.   Mrs. Smith had a sweet shop on the corner and David wondered if she may be open even at Christmas, so holding his jar he walked down the lane.  An old lady coming the other way saw that David looked so unhappy and stopped to put a few coins into his jar.  He walked on but found that if he rattled his jar as people passed by they would stop and add to his coins.

David quickly found out that the sweet shop was not open so he made his way back home and to his joy many more people gave him money on the way.  Mummy and the rest of the family were amazed when David returned with his jar completely full of money,

“It seems to me,” said uncle Fred, “that you have more than enough to keep you in sweets for many a day.”

“I am not going to spend it on sweets,” said David.   “I have heard that there are some children so poor that they don't have enough to eat.  My friend Peters' dad is a member of something called Rotary and he says they give lots of money to poor people, so I am going to give it to him for his dad. “

David's mummy quietly left the room but was quickly back and in her arms she carried all his Christmas presents.
