Thu, Feb 25th 2021 at 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

David, a well-known Musical Director in the West of Scotland, will give a talk to the members
VoT: Jim Robertson

President Katrina welcomed everyone to the meeting, including the speaker, David Fisher, and Lorna Dick (Larkhall Inner Wheel) who was visiting the Club.  She also welcomed David Grieve who was going to the inducted into the Club later in the evening.

President Katrina introduced our speaker for this evening, David Fisher, the organist and choirmaster at Orchardhill Parish Church, Giffnock, and Musical Director and founder of the choir, Octave.

David gave an insight into his musical journey.  He started learning the piano when he was only six years old. After primary school he attended Bellshill Academy where he became involved in the school musicals.  His music teachers at Bellshill Academy, Cameron Merryweather and Sam McFadyen, were a great influence, both at school and in his musical career in later life.

As a teenager he played piano for the Boys’ Brigade and Guild and took the opportunity to practise on the church organ. At 18 years old he became organist and choirmaster at North Motherwell Parish Church and at 21 he became a Musical Director. In the past 29 years he has been involved with over 18 musical theatre groups.  Local groups included Our Lady’s Light Opera, where he was Musical Director for 13 years, involved in 24 shows.

Over the years, he has performed at The Glasgow Music Festival, The Royal Concert Hall and The Kings Theatre, Glasgow.

Throughout his presentation, David showed slides and told various humorous stories of instances during his musical career.

Although his musical work has been curtailed during lockdown, the BBC will be broadcasting some of his work on Palm Sunday.

After David answered a series of questions put to him by the members, Jim Robertson proposed the vote of thanks, speaking about the importance of music in the history of our Club and thanking David for a very enjoyable presentation.
