Purple Crocuses for Nailsworth

See the crocuses in flower.

Last October Nailsworth in Bloom, along with members of Rotary in Nailsworth and ‘Nailsworthians’, enjoyed a lovely day planting purple crocuses around the town.

During the week of the 23rd February the crocuses will pop up their little purple heads to celebrate World Rotary Day and Polio Eradication. For more than 30 years Rotary and its partners have led the effort to eradicate polio worldwide by vaccinating children on a massive scale.

As a core partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Rotary focuses on advocacy, fundraising, recruiting volunteers, and raising awareness. Our partners in the GPEI provide technical support, investigate outbreaks, manage vaccine distribution, and more.

Today, almost 100 years since we first started the fight against polio, we have isolated the tiny pockets of polio outbreak in just two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, with the rest of the world polio free. That is an incredible reversal of the situation.
