The Club Bulletin for July 2021

                                          Rotary Club of Cheltenham North

                                                   July 2021 Bulletin

Despite the large number of positive cases of Covid 19 in Cheltenham there are only 18 patients in hospital with Covid today and only two of these are in critical care. None of these people had been double jabbed. This is very encouraging – the vaccine appears to be giving a high degree of protection. However, there is some concern that long covid continues to be a problem even for those only mildly affected so hopefully the scientists will soon find a reliable and safe treatment in the near future. It does mean however, that we should continue to exercise some caution even if the all the restrictions are lifted later this month.

New President Geoffrey Fox

As I write this, July 1st is approaching very quickly, and as I contemplate being President of our Club during the period when we will be celebrating the Club’s formation 50 years ago, I hope that we will finally be free of Covid restrictions in the very near future.

It is difficult not to have great admiration for Richard’s handling of Covid during his year, and the way he has utilised Zoom In addition, despite everything, he has managed to find the funds to purchase a vehicle for a local Cheltenham Charity, Community Connections, and this also deserves our thanks. Thanks too, to Mike Rouse, who also successfully dealt with the limitations imposed by Covid.

Our first two Meetings in July will be by Zoom, but I have hope and believe that on 29th July our Partners Evening will be a face to face event at Brickhampton Golf Club. This is a new venue and has the advantage that all facilities are separate from those of the golf members. Hopefully following Brickhampton, we should be able revert to face to face meetings at the New Club.

There will then hopefully, follow a full programme of fund raising events, though both the Beer and Wine Festivals will not be held at their normal times, as a result of Covid. There will be a 50th Anniversary Celebration in April 2022 at the Queens Hotel. In addition some thought has been given to the possibility of planting a further 50 trees, following on the successful planting of 100 trees in celebration of the Rotary Club of Cheltenham’s Centenary.

Above all, I hope we have a happy year. A happy team is a much more productive team. A happy Club is an attractive Club, and that can only be a good thing.

Obituary – Roger Barclay- Edwards IPP Richard Purdon

28.11.45 – 26.06.21

Roger grew up in and around Chelmsford. He was educated at the King Edward VI Grammar school where he excelled academically and loved his time playing tennis and hockey. From here he went to Kingston University in London, and obtained a degree in Engineering. His talent at tennis enabled him to play at Wimbledon twice.

In time he set up an Engineering group – EDS. He was involved with them for over 35 years. They gained a reputation for high quality precision work.

And he also took over the Chelmsford Rivermead Industrial Estate and totally refurbished it, eventually moving his factory there.

Roger has been a Rotarian in many different clubs since the age of 25. He joined Cheltenham North on 5th November 2009. Susie and he bought their first house in Cheltenham in 2004, and moved in during 2006. We learnt then about his Sumber Sari – eco- friendly – development near Ibud in Bali.

This developed into a complex heated by the sun, with 3 family villas and 8 private bungalows. A swimming pool was an added luxury. The complex has been taken over by a development partner, although they still own an apartment in Ubud.

By 2013, Roger’s mobility had become somewhat restricted. But, he became used to a TGA Buddy, vehicle to get around.

I will remember his happy, smiling face as he welcomed swimmers at our fund raising event at the Cheltenham College in 2010/11, and him kindly selling programmes at our Xmas Carol Concerts.

In the last few months he was suffering from advanced Pancreatic Cancer. He was marvellously looked after by Susie, with the great help of the Sue Ryder Nurses in the last few days.

A good man, full of the ideals of the Rotary spirit, has now left us.

The Rotary Club of Cheltenham North join Richard inn sending our deepest sympathy to Susie and family.
