After a long Covid 19 induced absence the Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill Charity Golf Tournament, sponsored by Stibbards Funeral Directors, returned the Rochford Hundred Golf Club on Friday 13th August when the team prize was won by the “5 Iron” Twits team. The runners-up team was “The Happy Hooks”.
In a closely fought individual competition two players shared the lead on 40 points, Jamie Gold and Scott Bartlett. Jamie Gold was confirmed the winner on countback.
Competitions for Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive were won by Duncan Jobson and Martin Jobson respectively and additional consolation prizes were given to the valiant putters who attempted to land their putts on a £10 note but narrowly failed.
The competition was followed by an evening meal after which the proceedings were interrupted by a resurrected Sir Winston Churchill who gave an informative and amusing talk on his life with its many challenges and changes of direction.
The players were delighted at the return of the much-loved competition and donated generously to the raffle and charity auction which rounded off the evening and which benefitted the principal beneficiary, the Southend homeless charity HARP (HARP | Southend's homeless charity (harpsouthend.org.uk)) whose volunteers were enthusiastic contributors to the success of the day by way of their sales of raffle tickets, putting competition promotion and donation of items for the charity auction. The tournament will also help top-up the Rotary Club’s Covid 19 much depleted Charity Fund coffers.
