Inspired by Scarborough’s Fin the Fish, (see pictured here), the combined Rotary Clubs of Thanet have been working on a similar project for Margate promenade/main sands which they hope will get the go ahead for next spring.
The 'Fin the Fish' project was part-funded by Yorkshire Water Authority, Thanet Rotary Clubs approached Southern Water to see if they would be willing to assist. It was great news to hear they pledged to kick start the fundraising campaign for this ‘Rotary in Thanet' project with a significant boost towards the total expected budget of £20,000.
The installation is designed for the collection of plastic waste for recycling aimed at reducing plastic on the beach; to educate and inform, as well as complementing the artistic culture currently existing in Margate.
Discussions are ongoing with Thanet District Council and the hope is that the project will be given the go ahead soon so that crowdfunding pages can go live. Support for the project will also be invited from local businesses .
All being well, and the installation takes place, the fish will need a name and local school students will be invited to give us some ideas.
At some time in the future, it is hoped similar installations might be sited around other Thanet Bays and beaches in years to come.
