Youth Technician's Tournament

The Club has a ‘running’ agenda in helping youngsters in our Community. Each year we arrange events for youngsters to participate such as A Young Technician’s Tournament and The Rotary Young Leader Award.

The Young Technician Tournament is open to local schools and colleges.

Students have to work together to solve a particular and previously unseen task aimed at testing their mental and physical dexterity. Tournaments are a challenging but enjoyable experience for all participants. It’s an interesting and fun day out which tests the knowledge, ingenuity, innovation, application and manual skills of the team members and their ability to work as a teams. It is designed to challenge design, develop, build and test a solution to an unknown technical challenge, using materials supplied, against the clock, in a one-day event which takes place at the Scarborough Rugby Club.

The task(s) are consistent with the requirements of the national curriculum and its execution develops team building, communication skills, planning and time management, as well as solving a design and technology problem.

There are three age categories for team members; Foundation (11-14) Intermediate (15-16) and Advanced (16+). The degree of complexity of the task is increased at each age level. Teachers are very complimentary about what the students get out of it and how it integrates into the academic curriculum.

RYLA is a leadership development course. It is not a pass or fail course and you will be as successful on it as you are willing to be. There are no limits for your development. We aim to help you realise some of the leadership potential that others have seen when they selected you for it. It is not an outward bound course! Yes, a lot of the activities may take place outside but it is about using a variety of activities, both in and outdoors to develop you as an individual, as a team member and as a leader of a team in a safe and enjoyable environment.

There are two courses that we run on consecutive weeks in the summer school or college holidays for young people who are 16 and 17 years old. They take place at a scout hostel called Hebden Hey on the outskirts of Hebden Bridge

Participants are sought by the Club and, once the award has been accomplished, they are encouraged to come along to the Club and to give a presentation about their experience and what they managed to achieve. Everyone who has undertaken RYLA says that it has enriched their life and helped them to understand different aspects of working with a team.
