Rotary Club of Cheltenham North
June 2022 Bulletin
A message from the President Geoff Fox
As the Club enters the final month of its 50th year, a few reflections may not be out of place.
The effects of Covid have slowly though not totally receded, and virtually all of this year’s Club Meetings, have been face to face, though some Members have declined to attend, as a result of concerns about passing Covid on to susceptible friends or relatives. Some, though not all of activities have resumed, and we were able to hold a very successful Wine Festival at the Pump Room in October, and an equally successful Carol Concert at the Ladies College in December. Unfortunately despite the Club’s best efforts, the Beer Festival has fallen into abeyance, for non Covid reasons, in the past two years.
The biggest, and probably the most important event of the year, has been the 50th Celebration held at the Queens Hotel on April 14th. 84 attended, including the Mayor, the District Governor, and the local Member of Parliament. We were also delighted to welcome Members of other Clubs, including the Cheltenham Rotary Club, our Mother Club. Due to previous financial planning, and very careful management, the event produced a small profit. Warmest congratulations and thanks to all those concerned.
Choosing the Charities to support during my year proved to be quite difficult, there being so many very worth of support. I have though, in the past week, come into close contact, with two of those that I have chosen. A few nights ago, quite by chance, I had dinner with a very courageous gentleman suffering with Motor Neurone Disease. Despite his best efforts, his speech was very difficult to understand. In addition, he had difficulty with his swallowing, and had been told that he would require the use of a wheel chair in 6 months. A painful reminder for me, but very much worse for him. A day or two later, on a more cheerful note, Jill and I visited an old friend in the Sue Ryder Home in Leckhampton. It is a beautiful building with glorious views, and a very cheerful and helpful staff, every facility being provided for the patients. Our friend who had been receiving treatment for cancer, had improved so much, that she was being allowed home in a couple of days. I was left thinking that these two Charities, like so many others, are very worthy of our support.
The year has been a very happy, and also a very busy time, and I have gratefully received the help, advice and wisdom of several Club Members, who have covered my mistakes and shortcomings, and reassured me as necessary, from time to time. I am very grateful to all of them.
Finally, it is a great pleasure, on July 7th, to welcome Janet Keenan as our new President, and to wish here every good fortune, for what I know will be a very happy and successful Rotary Year.
Visit to Aerospace Bristol Peter Watson
After a number of cancellations over the past 2 years and Aerospace Bristol not taking group booking or having guided tours I have now been able to provisionally book a visit to Aerospace Bristol on Wednesday 9th November 2022 starting at 10.00 am. The cost will be £14 admission
fee plus £7 for a guided tour of Concorde. Following the visit there is an option to having a light lunch at the cafe on site or going to Cribbs Causeway, a short distance away. I will not be organising the lunch.
I would be grateful if you will let me know by email before Wednesday 8th June whether you are still interested, this day is suitable and if you will be accompanied by your partner. Once I have numbers I will book and confirm with you. My email address is: patpeterw@aol.com
Let us hope it can go ahead this time!!!
Cheltenham Wine Festival – Saturday 29 October 2022 Steve Wood
As members are no doubt aware, the 7th Cheltenham Wine Festival will take place on Saturday 29 October 2022 at the Pittville Pump Room.
Tickets have been on sale since 1 April and, following a buoyant start, sales have dried up a little lately. I would ask all members to promote the event and to encourage ticket sales to their family and friends. Tickets can be purchased from the Cheltenham Wine Festival web site, which can be accessed either directly or via the Club website. The price per ticket is £25, but you and your friends and family can secure a £5 discount by entering the code ROTARY22 in the promo code box on the page where you enter your name, email and address. The box appears just above the space for entering your name.
We are hoping for another successful Wine Festival. Requests for help on the day will be sent out much nearer the date, which as I write this is 145 days away.
Carol Concert – 13 December 2022 Nigel Gilhead
As the newly appointed Carol Concert Co-ordinator for 2022, I have the difficult task of taking over from the late Geoff Craven. The first planning meeting for the 2022 Carol Service will be at the New Club, on the same day as the AGM. The meeting will be at 17.00 on Thursday 16th June, all volunteers are welcome. Those involved in planning last year's event will be especially welcome.
Mile of Coins
The mile of coins took place on Saturday 28 May involving all 4 Cheltenham Clubs. The number taking part was lower this time around probably because it competed with appeals for Ukraine. However, I heard on the grapevine that £6,000.00 was raised which seems a very good result considering all the difficulties at the present time. Thank you to all who helped in any way.
LINC Cycle Ride
As one of the President’s chosen charities for his year LINC will be holding its annual cycle ride on Sunday 17 July. We are very grateful to Tony Pawley who is taking part again this year.
