2022 Schools Public Speaking Showcase

On Wednesday 6th July, Cirencester Rotary Club was once again very pleased to present this year's Schools Public Speaking Showcase, designed to develop the public speaking skills and self-confidence of our young people. It took place at the Royal Agricultural University, and Deer Park and Kingshill, two of our prestigious local secondary schools, participated. The standard of presentation was exceptional and the audience of Rotary Club members, partners, and friends together with participant’s family members, friends and teaching staff were very impressed by the diverse content, quality and confidence of all the speakers involved.

The participating students, together with the subjects of their speeches, were:

Kingshill School:

• “Heroes” by Eliza Taylor of Year 8

• “Feminism” by Summer Woolridge of Year 9

• “Aliens” by Adam Price of Year 10

Deer Park School:

• “Mental Health in Young Lives” by Evelyn Bransbury of Year 8

• “Language Learning for Young People” by Olivia Draper of Year 9

• “The Great Emu War of 1932” by Nigel Boateng of Year 10 and also

• “The Glass Ceiling” by Bella Canestra of Year 10

Local Rotarian and host Chris Rowbotham said, “This annual competition is a great opportunity to help develop the verbal presentation skills of many of our outstanding young people. Our warmest congratulations go to all the participants."

Each of these students were presented with an Amazon gift voucher and certificate, by Howard Davies (Club President), for their willingness, bravery, and hard work involved in taking part. The Club also awards the Fred Perkin Cup each year for the most ‘ear and eye catching’ speech, and this year it went to Summer Woolridge from Kingshill School for her speech entitled “Feminism”. As Mark Wilton the Lead Judge explained, “It was a very close-run thing with so many excellent presentations to choose from; but Summer’s subject and audience-engaging delivery were particularly memorable and she thoroughly deserved this award.”

Following the event, Joe Lay (Deer Park English Teacher and Event Lead) commented:  “Chris, thank you so much for last night. It was a really great Showcase. It was a wonderful experience for our pupils, and great preparation for their next steps in life. Please pass our thanks on to all of the Rotary Club members. It was a very enjoyable evening; we look forward to next year!”
