Interesting Facts

Fact 1 – Beer is the third drink most consumed worldwide after water and tea.

Fact 2 – In the middle ages clean water was often difficult to find. Many people drank beer instead because the alcohol made it safer than water.

Fact 3 – In 1814 London suffered the Great Beer Flood when about 388,000 gallons of beer flooded the streets around Tottenham Court Rd after vats in a brewery ruptured. Two houses were demolished and nine people died but a judge ruled the flood was an Act of God.

Fact 4 – The worlds most expensive beer is Belguim’s La Vieille Bon Secours ale which costs £700 a bottle

Fact 5 – Cenoscillicaphobia is fear of an empty glass, Labeorphilists collect beer bottles and Tegestology is the term given for collecting beer mats

Fact 6 - The first consumer protection law ever written was enacted over beer by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria in 1516. It was a purity law limiting the ingredients of beer to barley, hops and water.

Fact 7 - People in Czech Republic drink more beer than anywhere else, an average of 143 litres per head. The figure for the UK is around 67 litres per head.

Fact 8 - The worlds largest beer mat was made in 2002 by Carlsberg in Denmark and measured 15 metres in diameter

Fact 9 - Pilgrims on the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock rather than continuing to Virginia because they ran out of beer on the journey.

Fact 10 - Monks brewing beer in the Middle Ages were allowed to drink five quarts of beer a day.

Cluster Visit to Minster on Sea in 2022

We have formed a cluster with 4 other European clubs. Each year one club hosts the other three, who each make a donation of 1500 Euros to the host club to spend on a project of their choice.
