The Club Bulletin for October 2022

Rotary Club of Cheltenham October 2022 Bulletin

Remember, remember the 5th of November Richard Purdon

It’s a Saturday this year!

For the past 15 years, I have organised help from the Rotary Clubs in Cheltenham to help with the organisation of the magnificent fireworks display run by the CHELTENHAM ROUND TABLE.

They have asked for help again this year. We have to turn up at 4 .30 p.m. to attend the briefing meeting in the OX WING BAR, within the Grandstand complex. This allows us to gain parking on site by the Hall of Fame entrance. Then we are allocated some steward duties. Previously this was either taking money on the gate or assisting the public with their enquiries. The fireworks go off around 7.30 p.m.

Last year, all the tickets were sold on line in advance. So a lot of our members were sent to the Best Mate Stand area to be present at the fun fair!!

The pre-sold tickets were then checked on pre- set mobile phone apps. This for our generation was outside of our comfort zone!?

Nevertheless, there were many advantages of helping. Free entry to see the fireworks; a 1 course supper is provided for all helpers; and there was a bar set up for a drink to accompany the food.

But, in addition, historically our Club has benefitted greatly from the surplus profits on the evening.

The event was an outstanding success last year. And our Club alone were given £3000 towards our charity funds.

I must stress that in the event of a poor turnout or inclement weather on the night, there is no guarantee of money being allocated.

So, if any younger or newer members, and their partners, would like to help, please let me know by the 20th October please.

Mile of Coins

We have had the pay out from the Mile of Coins. Members will recall that we were asked to sponsor or sell strips of End Polio Now Mile of Coins for the support RI is giving to eradicating Polio from the World. It was also part of the celebration of 100 years of Rotary in Cheltenham.

The timing of this activity was difficult with the funds already committed to the Ukraine Appeal, and other local fund raising events.

Cheltenham Club led the event and had generously agreed to share the surplus equally between the 3 Clubs involved. They had arranged sponsorship which covered the flyers and the printing of the cards.

So in the middle of September our Club account for End Polio Now was credited with $2700 dollars.

This will not be shown in our Club Trust Fund for 2022/23, as the payment went direct from Cheltenham and was then allocated accordingly.

Thank you to those club members who participated.

Richard Purdon Foundation Chairman – 2022/23

Tony Pawley Gill Rouse 3

A huge thank you to everyone who helped with the collection at Prescott Hill Climb on 3rd & 4th September in support of LINC. At very short notice, Tony very kindly took over the organisation as I was rather incapacitated. The final total was just under £600 which will go towards funding our two clinical psychologists. Sincere thanks to you all,

Bits and Pieces

· The number of people in hospital locally with Covid has risen to over 150 but only 3 require ICU. It is however, a timely reminder to have our covid vaccines together with the flu vaccine.

· Sue Jenkins has been busy replanting trees that have not survived and those that have been vandalised. She has also managed to get some of the trees that were already planted sponsored. Michael R has been out with her busy photographing the latest plantings.

· The Wine Festival will soon be upon us. Please make sure you have signed up to help on the 29th October and that you have purchased your tickets if you wish to taste.

· Tickets for the Carol Concert on 13 December will soon be available on line – we are just waiting for the site to be set up. Once I have log in details I can get the flier to print. Tickets this year are £12 each.

· Everyone should have received an advert booking form for the Carol Concert brochure. Please pass this on to anyone you know who might place an advert.

· President Janet has met with Pete Chadwick at the New Club to discuss meal prices – she will no doubt let us know how she got on in due course.

· A reminder to look in your attics for any small items that you are happy to donate to Rosanne for her to sell at auction in support of School in a bag.

· With all the world disasters that have occurred recently the Shelterbox stores must be well depleted. Just an idea but maybe we can all donate money to shelterbox (via Rosanne) instead of sending Christmas cards to other members.
