                                                         March 2023 Bulletin

Thoughts for March

If you don’t leave your past in the past it will destroy your future.

Live for what today has to offer, not what yesterday has taken away.

Broken trust is like melted chocolate. No matter how much you freeze it, it will

never go back to its original shape.

Gold Cup 100 Community Grant Initiative Richard Purdon

The Jockey Club will be running this local grant scheme to celebrate 100 years of running the gold cup.

Launched in March it is open to applications from the local community organisations that are registered or operate within the boundaries of the postcodes GL50 to GL54.

The following will be eligible to apply:

· Registered charities

· Recognised established community groups promoting sport , art or health and

well being

· Schools and playgroups

· Sporting, art or music groups or societies

· Other not for profit organisations

· Local Authorities

The scheme will operate from 1st March 2023 until 31st August 2024

During the year specific events associated with the gold cup 100 centennial year will be identified as fund raising occasions for the community grant initiative.

· The grants will range from £500 - £2,500

· these grants must be applied for from the official cheltenham gc 100hub website

· each application will be reviewed for eligibility by a panel from the racecourse and rotarians

· there will be 2 opportunities to apply. firstly by 1/2/2024, and the awards will be given in March 2024 at the next festival

· the second round must be in by 1/8/2024 and will be granted 31/820/24.

So I encourage all club rotarians to think about our contacts in the community, and to encourage them to apply through the correct channel.

David Mace Obituary Clive O’Gorman

David was born in Wool, Dorset on 28th January 1944.

His father was in the army and the family moved frequently.

Spells in Germany and Cyprus followed. Schooling was disrupted with David attending 13 schools in 10 years.

On leaving school he joined the Berkshire constabulary serving at Newbury and Windsor. When the Thames Valley Police force was formed in 1969 from the five forces of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Reading Borough and Oxford City he served in other areas. David made his way up the ranks finally transferring as Superintendent to Gloucestershire in 1986. He retired from the police service in 1994 with his final position as Assistant Chief Constable seconded to the Home Office.

On retirement from the police service, David went into management consultancy for eight years.

He joined Cleeve Vale Rotary in January 1988 and served as their President in 2005/2006. David joined Cheltenham North Rotary Club in November 2015.

In retirement his interests were wide and various. He served as a Bournside School Governor, member of Cotswold Hills Golf Club, and Gloucester Rugby Club season ticket holder.

He was actively involved in St Philip and St James Church overseeing among other things the major reordering project that was completed in May 2021.

David leaves a wife Hazel, sons Jonathan and Robert and five grandchildren.

His funeral will be held on March 17th at 2.30.PM. at the Church of St. Phillips and St. James

Memorial Service for Lady Carolyn Elwes

Sir Henry has been an Honorary Member of RCCN for many years and has chosen the club on more than one occasion to benefit from their wonderful snowdrop collection at Colesbourne when we provided and sold teas.

Lady Carolyn died very suddenly just before Christmas and her memorial service will be held in Gloucester Cathedral on Friday 10th March at 230pm.
