The Hadze
An insight to the life of the Hadze
The speaker on Thursday 16th March was our own member John Blowes. John spoke about the Hadze, a hunter gatherer tribe who live in the Karatu district of northern Tanzania. The Hadze language is entirely oral using click sounds. They do not grow any food but have a diet of tubers and meat from small animals which they kill using bow and arrow. They have no formal religion but worship the Sun and celebrate the new moon in dance.
John’s daughter is a midwife and her husband Mika operates Doroba Safaris. They have built a relationship with the Hadze and bring tourists to camp with the Hadze. John and his wife Angela went on a safari, camping with the Hadze, who were very friendly and welcomed them to share their food.Through contact with other Tanzanian people some young Hadze had taken up the opportunity for higher education and then returned to the tribe.
In answer to members’ questions John said the people were healthy however Covid-19 had been found in the population.
