The Club Bulletin for May 2023

                                                 Rotary Club of Cheltenham North

                                                                    May 2023 Bulletin

What is life if full of care we have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs and stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass the place where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see in broad daylight, streams full of stars like skies at night,

A poor life this is full of care we have no time to stand and stare.

W.H Davies

Sue Jenkins

Part of the official Coronation celebrations is to dedicate the Bank Holiday Monday as a volunteering day.

Rotarians may be interested in helping our sibling satellite club with a national / Rotary volunteering opportunity on the Big Help Out day on Monday 8th May.

Cheltenham North are in the process of setting up a new younger, informal and active Rotary club to improve disadvantaged areas of Cheltenham. The club is called Cheltenham Future, and meet mostly early in the morning in Montpellier at the Chaplais Kitchen cafe, so people can see new friends, plan events, and have breakfast before starting their day. Also, there are some early evening meetings at The Beehive pub in Montpellier. https://www.facebook.com/groups/417136507200063

One of their projects for the volunteering Big Help Out day on the 8th May Bank Holiday is to do a Litter Pick around Coronation Square. https://www.rotarygbi.org/events/the-big-help-out/

Cheltenham Borough Council are helping us by supplying the equipment and if you know of groups or individuals who might want to help, please let me know.

The proposal is to do a litter pick for a maximum of 2 hours (10-12am) at Coronation Square, Hesters Way. Of course, you may have visitors for the Coronation weekend who would be able to help as well. Everyone is welcome. Please let Sue Jenkins know if you can join us on the day by emailing woodlandscape@aol.com, or ringing her.

Pendyrus Male Voice Choir Concert John Phillip

After a worryingly slow start for ticket sales the fame of Pendyrus Male Choir shone through and attracted a large and enthusiastic audience. More than half of the sales were made on line as a result of persistent promotion through social media.

The choir entertained us wonderfully with an eclectic choice of music from traditional Welsh ballads early in the show to songs from well-loved musicals. The celebrated Musical Director, Ieuan Jones, extracted a wide range of delightful sounds from his sixty choristers. The audience of c.225 responded with obvious enthusiasm. Two young female soloists brought even more variety to the show.

We appear to have discovered an alternative home for our concerts. The Headmistress and Operations Manager of Leckhampton High School were very supportive. The main hall, drama studio and foyer offered us all the elements we needed to accommodate the performers, audience and wine sales in the interval at a cost substantially below those required by other venues.

Beth & I are heavily in debt to all the members who helped us make the concert such a success.

The next charity event of Cheltenham North will be a Gardeners Question Evening on May 18th at the same venue. Please help make it equally successful by promoting the event and selling tickets.

Well done John & Beth and thank you.

District Boules Nigel Gilhead

The District boules league is starting in May. I will circulate a tick list at the meeting on 4th May asking for expressions of interest and a preferred weekday evening to host home games.

Allėe Cheltenham North.

Donation to Darcie Jen Linda Pawley

You will remember we donated £50 to Darcie Jen, a member of Girl Guiding Gloucestershire, towards her INTOPS Trip. Initially it was expected that the trip would be to India but this was changed due to visa problems and her group’s trip was booked for South Africa instead.

Please see her presentation which is attached.

Gardeners Question Evening Thursday 18 May Beth Phillip

Many thanks to those who have already promised cakes and help for the GQE. It would be simpler if those offering help contacted me directly to avoid going through Clive. I would like to send 2 or 3 questions from you to the panel in the next couple of days. You will be asked to pose your questions on the night but forewarned is forearmed and this always ensures a confident and lively start to the evening. Tickets are on sale now from Beth. Many thanks,

Future Programme Clive O’Gorman
