Calderdale Royal Hospital

The main Hospital for the the town

The Calderdale Royal Hospital is in the area known as  Salterhebble (“Salter” Mouth of “Hebble” the river in the valley which joins the Calder, here).

Calderdale Royal Hospital is a modern centre of excellence which first opened its doors to patients in April 2001. The hospital offers a full range of day case and outpatient services and an accident and emergency department. It is also the specialist centre for planned orthopaedic and general surgery (when patients need to stay at least one night) for the residents of Calderdale and Kirklees and further afield.

The hospital is also the local centre for consultant-led maternity care, inpatient paediatric (children’s) services and neonatal care. Calderdale Royal Hospital was one of the country’s first PFI hospitals. It was officially opened by the Princess Royal on March 15, 2004.

The hospital was built by the Catalyst Healthcare consortium. Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for the provision of all clinical services.

The hospital incorporates the site and some buildings of the former St Luke’s Hospital (commonly known as  Halifax General Hospital), which it replaced as well as the Royal Halifax Infirmary and Northowram Hospital.

The Centenary Viewing Platform at Beacon Hill

back To celebrate 100 years of service to the town of Halifax we have commissioned viewing platform on Beacon Hill overlooking the town. Situated on the Magna Via, an old packhorse route, the walk to the top is worth it.
